Mothers' Day Silliness

The ability to create warm memories, some of them in the form of true silliness, is essential to getting and giving the most from our Motherhood. This blog explains the inspiration that gave birth to one of the poems in my third book: "How To Stretch A Puddle".
I called it "Mom's Maple Leaves".
Inspired Silliness!
My mom was one of those special people with an innate ability to inspire trust. She had an inner confidence and was not afraid to break the norms of what was acceptable in the way of activities for her children if it meant bringing something special to the table for those little memory cells to latch onto and treasure:
So it was on one morning in 1953, or 54 that she decided her four small children needed a creative outlet for their bursting energy; she brought in piles of newspapers that were waiting to go out to the curb (We were living in a row house on Albert St. at the time), and she began tearing the paper into pieces - about the size of maple leaves.
She had decided that since there were no maple leaves around, and actually no real yard for us to play in, that she would create our own leafy wonderland in the middle of the living room!
I was pretty young at that time, but I relive the pure joy of the experience every time I hear again my mother's voice - the way she related the story to me, with a mischievous grin on her face. I can feel again the excitement of not only letting ourselves get totally blackened by those newspaper leaves as we jumped and rolled in them, but of being on the same level as our mother who was right in there with us having a totally wonderful time. She had weighed the consequences of the total mess that she'd have to clean up, with the amount of joy that it would create and decided that it was totally worth it.
Mothers are memory makers extraordinaire; The effects of all the little things that we do every day are building blocks that matter very much. The times that we let ourselves become children again and go a little silly - those are the times that our children (and Grandchildren) will keep in a very special place in their hearts - somewhere easy to find when a little bit of silliness, wrapped up in a warm memory, is what the doctor ordered. May that love-inspired silliness never leave us!
