Chill, Papa Joe!
Friends of ours were relating an incident where their 3½ yr. old great grandson, Jayden, came out with the above expression, to try and help his ‘Papa’ deal with a stressful incident – Ah, the wisdom of children! It came back to my mind this morning as I faced a sink full of dirty pots crying for my attention. My grandmother Blanchfield, as I was told, had her own special way of dealing with stress; Whenever she had a problem to work out, or an upsetting incident to get over, she would pick a drawer and give it a thorough cleaning. So, I thought of grandma as I picked up the first pot, dug out the baking soda, and started to clean. Sometimes, the most mundane task can teach so much: As I worked at the stains, and they gave way to my elbow grease, I thought about how life’s problems are like those stains: They can easily build up, and seem too difficult to even try to solve - They stubbornly resist our efforts, hoping that we’ll give up first! Not today, guys! As the gleam of stainless (right!) steel started to increase, I began to relax into a whole meditation thing; it became less work, and more a mind exercise; I really got into it then, determined that I would keep up the baking soda assault; I would not settle for 90% - I would keep going until it was 100% clean! That brought back another memory: My sisters will remember dishwashing chores at home: I would always pick the silverware or pot, to ‘polish’, while they dealt with all of the other dishes. They did not get the whole ‘meditative’ thing that was happening – go figure!
Thanks little Jayden for reminding us to ‘chill’ – Very cool!
