All Is Calm - Or Not!

The Christmas Season is a time for quiet reflection, but it is also an opportunity to express and share great joy!
All Is Calm – Or Not!
Christmas day has come and gone in all its frenetic beauty. And while I complain about the crazy pace that carries the season along, maybe that is the way it should be. For although we talk about wanting a peaceful, quiet, reflective time to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas; at the same time, the childhood memories that made Christmas such a wondrous event, were anything but quiet; and certainly, for our parents, they were anything but peaceful! Growing up in a large, Catholic family, we observed the Advent season with anticipation, and a growing awareness that something very wonderful was being preserved; and although we were reverently celebrating the birthday of Jesus, we children were secretly celebrating the fact that He was the King of sharing! We were sure that he would be just as excited as we were, as we opened our gifts on Christmas morning, even though we neglected to think much about it being His birthday at all, at that point, and didn’t even inquire about whether He might have appreciated a birthday cake, a wrapped present or the birthday song! We were more concerned about whether our letters to Santa had made it out of our oil-stove flue and into Santa’s slipstream without burning up! We needn’t have worried: On Christmas morning, there they would be - presents wrapped in festive colours, under our equally colourful and heavily tinseled Christmas tree. Maybe Santa missed a few items on our wish list of ten, twenty, or thirty, but we bowed to his wisdom, and figured that probably Jesus had whispered a few words to His jolly red friend to make sure that we got those gifts that He truly wanted to share with us. Ushering in the season of hope should be an opportunity for some calm, quiet reflection; but also a reason to put on a huge smile; and to open up that generous gift of pure, unbounded joy and to share it! Merry Christmas – Calm and Bright!
