Thoughts on Good Friday and Easter
An Easter Walk
Today is Good Friday. It called for a quiet, reflective walk and a think (as Winnie the Pooh would say). News this morning, of a dear childhood friend’s sudden passing, brought the day’s solemnity into a new light for me, and brought thoughts about time and life connections, and how there are so many mysteries that we cannot fathom. How many of us live each day in full appreciation, and give everything that we are capable of; leaving nothing left unoffered – as Jesus did on that first Good Friday. In our human incapacity to fully comprehend the big picture, we mistakenly believe that there will be time for us to complete all that is in us to complete. Our life’s potential awakens again every morning, like a fresh plot of soil, waiting for us to get a move on, and to plant those beautiful coloured eggs of inspiration that grace us with their presence.
The sound of Church bells are filling the air, calling people to remember, and to offer praise and thank-you’s, with the most powerful sounds that we can make – bells, choirs, trumpets, and the most powerful of all: our kind words and thoughtful responses towards the people around us, and to the natural world that God has made us stewards of.
Sunday, we will celebrate Easter – Flower buds are popping, and bunnies are hopping; and like those bunnies, who deliver the mysterious, luscious eggs that show up on Easter morning to delight children, and adults (who can really resist chocolate?), I find myself wondering, “Where did those eggs come from, and what should I do with them?” I’m aware that I have barely made a dent in the potential seeds that could be sown, the beautiful coloured eggs that I am capable of delivering! I’m hoping that the fruit of my seedlings will be encouraging gifts for others, and for myself as well.
I finished my walk, and my think, with the ringing of church bells, the tinkling of wind chimes, and the songs of loved ones’ spirits kissing my ears. Happy Easter!
