Inspiration found in a hospital room.
I Found A Pearl Today
What has an oyster got going for it? On the outside - not very much - not a very attractive looking creature. But, on the inside – opalescent colours of the rainbow, and occasionally – a pearl!
Life in a hospital ward can be like that oyster. If you look at the exterior – the beds, beige-coloured curtains and walls, contraptions in drab colours for lifting, monitoring, injecting, and feeding; and at patients, laying in hopes of healing, of appreciation, of recognition and reassurance, it is easy to overlook the riches that are also present.
Each of the doctors, nurses, the attendants, the cleaners, and the patients themselves, carry the seeds of pearls within them.
A lowly oyster has the ability to filter 5 litres of water a day – to remove the toxins, and excess nutrients and render the water purer; Every person within a hospital room has the same potential, to use whatever they have within them to filter and heal the atmosphere around them, and to make their world a better place. Every smile – every kind word – every act of consideration, and every laugh – adds luster to the pearl that they carry within them. Occasionally, a very special seed is planted – one that will not only nurture the body, but will touch the soul. Today, as I was leaving my mother’s hospital bed to go home, the lovely lady across from her motioned me to follow her downstairs. She led me to the chapel on the first floor, and together, as I stood by her wheelchair, we prayed for my mother. I added a prayer for her healing as well, and I thanked God for this very special moment – truly a precious pearl!
As I head back to the hospital tomorrow, I’ll let my thoughts be filtered by respect, and good humour; and I’ll treasure all of the pearls that are there – including the one that encases my beautiful mother.
