Thoughts On E-Publishing 1/14/2011 7:09:54 AM
My novel "The Ghosts of Hanoi" was published as an ebook (electronic book for those of you unfamiliar with the term) on Smashwords.com, which means buyers can pay about $5 and then download a copy and read it on their computer. It is also available on Barnes & Noble, Sony, Kobo, Diesel, and Apple. Each of these has their own reader (such as the IPad) to download and read ebooks. I'm waiting for Smashwords to work out software problems with Amazon so it can be purchased for the Kindle. So far, the book has sold an astounding EIGHT copies. Yes, you read that right, 8. I have made a YouTube video about the book, pushed it on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, and even placed ads in a couple of local publications. (One of the more comical moments was when a relative asked how she could get an autographed copy!) For those of you considering epublishing, don't expect to achieve "best-seller" status! Anyway, hopefully my second novel will be published the more traditional way. I'm not sorry I went this route - it didn't cost me anything but some time to format and upload the book. Time will tell . . .
