Weigh It Carefully 7/19/2016 8:02:31 AM
As independent writers, we know that it can be slow going getting our book into the hands of a lot of people we know would enjoy reading it. Having said that, it is very important the way we proceed in getting that done. Advertising cost money, and unless you have an unlimited budget, you need to carefully consider where you put that money. I get many offers from people wanting to put my book on their list. “I hear you have a new novel; I can help get you exposure. I have a group of people who are interested in reading it, but you have to act now.”
First of all- how much is it? Does this person know anything about your book so that he/she will indeed know that it will be a good fit? Check it out. If the group of people they’re talking about is a group of, oh I don’t know, let’s say learning to cook, are they really going to embrace your book on car repair? Probably not. And why the all fired up hurry to pay for it right away? True, everyone wants and needs to be paid for the services they do, but if you have to make your mind up in the next thirty seconds, then you might want to take a pass.
Before you commit to anything, check it out. Ask for references and check them out. Based on the cost of your book, how many copies will you have to sell to recoup your cost? Think about these things. Yes, sometimes we do have to take that “leap of faith” but if you’re leaping all over the place, you’re liable to fall. Consider carefully and take advice from those you trust. It’s your best bet in the long run.
