Are You Following Through? 7/19/2016 8:07:12 AM
Sitting alone in front of a computer, it can be easy to get side tracked. When we write, we write of our own volition. We don’t punch a time clock, and most of the time nobody looks over our shoulder and says something like “Aren’t you done yet?” Sitting alone in front of a computer, it can be easy to get side tracked. Writing belongs to the independent soul. The soul that keeps its own schedule- writing when the mood strikes. But sometimes we can get lost with that tremendous freedom. We get distracted by this or that, and then by the end of the day we get nothing done. We go to bed thinking that we’ll write tomorrow and we’ll make real progress. But then tomorrow comes and we get sidetracked and then…
Sometimes it becomes necessary to set a schedule- a set time when you sit down in front of that computer. Many times just that act of getting ready to write will start the ball rolling and the ideas will come. Make it a ritual. Make a cup of tea, light a candle or put on some relaxing background music. Get into a habit of doing certain things before you sit down to write that will signal your mind that it’s time to get to it. Now is writing time. Set aside a certain time when you are most likely to remain undisturbed so you will not get distracted and then let the time slip by with nothing done. Put the phone on “mute” Tell the kids that unless it is an emergency that you do not want to be disturbed.
Take your writing seriously. To be able to put words to paper is a gift that is denied to many. Cherish that gift and make the most of it.
