Even if you’re writing fiction, if you’re centering your story around actual occurrences (and places) then you want to make sure you have your ducks all in a row. When did some of the events in your back story happen? Who was involved and what were some of the outcomes? If these are actual towns or cities are they accurately described?
Do your research before you put pen to paper. The kind of reader who is going to be attracted to a fiction novel centering around his/her childhood city, for example, wants to know you have your facts straight about their hometown. It will keep them reading and keep them entertained. And they will be looking to read more of your work.
Many people feel that because they are writing fiction that they can make it up as they go along (and you certainly can) But the more realistic you make it with accurate dates and description of places then the more the reader who selected your work because it “brings back memories” will enjoy it.
