Many times, writers say that they don’t want to give their work away “for free” because that’s not the way to make money. You hear them say “Heck, I paid a lot to get that book published and now I need to make that back.” And you know what… they’re right to a certain extent. But it is also important to get your book into the hands of as many people as possible- because that’s the way to get people “buzzing” about your work. Many times, writers say that they don’t want to give their work away “for free” because that’s not the way to make money. You hear them say “Heck, I paid a lot to get that book published and now I need to make that back.” And you know what… they’re right to a certain extent. But it is also important to get your book into the hands of as many people as possible- because that’s the way to get people “buzzing” about your work.
Consider donating a few books to your local library, in fact. See if you can get your book into several. You never know who might read it. And you never know who that person knows. It was a thrill for me to be checking out a book in my local library, waiting on line only to find that the lady in front of me was checking out my latest book to read.
“That’s a good book, I read it,” I told her. She looked at me and then looked at my picture on the book. “You write it!” she blurted out and then the whole line started clapping. She later ordered a hard copy of it and I met her back at the library to autograph it for her.
But the point is that you want to get your work some exposure. And let’s face it guys, unless we’re Stephen King or any other widely read author, it may mean giving a few copies away here and there. But it may be well worth your while to do so.
