The Money sent home by Somalis in the Diaspora is estimated to be almost a billion dollar every year. More than 98% of these funds are utilized for the benefit of tribal groups. OH.. what a huge waste..... If we only had a government to which we pool our resources...to build schools and hospitals for the people regardless of their tribal origin.
We have fled from war
We are in the Diaspora
But we are still divided
We are part of the problem
Not part of the solution
Our remittances enrich warlords
Little reach the needy population
People live with spillovers, leftovers
No government institutions are in place
Resources trickle in tribal pockets
In tribal lands and tribal chiefs
Why can´t we unite?
I really do not know
Why are we always at war?
I don´t know that either
When time is the referee
The match has no time to end
But it has signs to show
Upon which we build and predict
I just keep reading them
Observing them, too.
Government of and by itself is never an answer. Unless it is a true servant of the people's will it becomes a nation's worst problem with no solutions. Bureaucracy is a three headed serpent devouring wealth and people and peace. I bid you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael
Are you sure remittances are the (main) problem? Is it not people's emphasis on clan instead of humanity? Money from piracy? Outside players putting their finger in (supporting or not any 'acceptable' transitional government) How would things improve if the diaspora stopped their remittances? I wish peace on the people in Somalia and all over the world! In peace, Rianne

You'd think after thousands of years of warring we'd get the picture that it does not work. Maybe we're a s.l.o.w. learning bunch.
