Oddities of nature

Curiosity lifted, light basks,
in the windows of my mind.
Among the revelations unveiled, lifted:
1) turtles breathe through their butts
(Humans would suffocate! What fool
would call that clean air?)
2) no matter what they want or how hard
they try, elephants can't jump
(Could you imagine the holes they'd
leave?)
3) butterflies graze, taste, with their
feet
(Hope they pride themselves on
washing first.)
4) all kinds of snails can sleep up to
three years
(No money can keep a kid--during
holidays especially--in bed past
seven.)
5) polar bears are left-handed
(A right-handed one is an oddity.)
6) wild ferns can take up residence
among weeds and thrive
(Weeds blanket the ferns with
shadows and collect water.)
7) an ostrich feels no misery--its' eye
is larger than its' brain
(The entire world of medicine
wouldn't exist if humans had no
pains, aches, or misery.)
8) a crocodile cannot stick its'
tongue out
(Wonder how much time and money
went into these studies.)
