first day back at the beach

addressed by the eye-level cry of a gull,
kissed by the salty spray off the incoming tide,
warmed by the sand beneath my feet
and the noon sun dancing in the surf,
surrounded by the pungent smell of algae,
soothed by the whisper of the pines
and the grassy wind-blown dunes,
diverted by the skittering fiddlers,
the school of porpoises at play,
the sandcastle aslant like pisa’s cockeyed tower,
and the smothered roar of waves in a conch,
captivated by the tiny sail rocking
on the crest of a distant swell

and aware again of being at one with the sea…

until teased with a smile and a wink
from the redhead displayed in the pink bikini.

say, is this really the south jersey shore
or the sunny side of shangrila?

Gene, So cold in Omaha right now that all i can think of is sunshine and warmth. I lived in California as a young girl and have the best memories of beach living! It is so peaceful!! Your poem brought all those memories back to life. Beautiful images of the beach. All we have in Omaha are mud bottom lakes that stink worse than the algae. Take care,~Chessly

Wonderful, Gene! Love to read your work aloud and imagine how it might sound if read aloud by you . . . to experience the poem's ebb and flow as you intended it.

Yes ... this is what I like about the beach and the sea ... a breath of fresh salty air at the margent of the world. I think there's a Tempest of poems to come from you, gene, on this marine theme.

The beach can do that for you... and then the mosquitoes the size of bomber, the incessant sound of the surf, and the constant onshore wind, not to mention the brutal midday sun, will get to ya.

Otherwise a pleasant write.

A wonderfully lovely poem Gene!

Your imagery makes me yearn for the sea, my times at the Cape with all the seals and dolphins (they can keep the sharks) :)
The temperature of that pink bikini must be very hot!
Blessings,
Christine

Charming, as always, Gene...Spring at the beach is the BEST time, 'cause the hoards of hue-mahns haven't got there yet. Evocative and wow--the wind in my hair! :)

Wonderful imagery, Gene; enjoyed! (I am not one for the beach: I'd rather be in the woods, listening to the birds singing or communing with nature. LOL)

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Texas, Karen Lynn. :D

Besides: I can't swim. Took lessons three times; STILL can't float! LOL

Sand between your toes...let the pebbles show the way...
to that pink bikini...check out that redhead, by the
seashore to see more.

Loving summer and sandy beaches, thank you for taking me there,
Lady Vivian

Gene, spoken in the romantic poetic vernacular of an old tar my dear friend. Elegantly with a few grains of tasty sea salt and crunchy sand eyeing a bikini with a red head strung inside. Shangrila(?) or the South Jersey shore to the sea no difference exists. I bid you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael

jersey shore and shangrila
jersey shore is shangrila through your wonderful eyes and sensibilities and the rich descriptor lines;
love the 'say,' at the start of the penultimate line,
love the whole piece, Gene.
