Snow Ghosts
By John Herlihy

The snow ghosts whisper into every ear,
Tales of the imagination that know no fear.
They lie embedded in every unique crystal,
Created from nature’s bounty the heart to thrill.

Perfect silence that never should be broken;
Perfect patterns a sublime mystery to betoken.
The snow ghosts open wide the inner eye,
As dusty as fine powder and looking spry.

Snow ghosts lie hidden in the snow flake’s guise,
Scary and seductive in this evocative disguise.
Perpetuating the myths of which humans are fond,
Feeling touched by the magic of their mystic wand.

Snow ghosts wander idly down darkened lanes,
Seeking ready accomplices who are suitably insane.
Those who recognize a presence in the white glow,
To unveil the eternal mystery lying hidden in snow.

To enter alien regions no one else dares to go;
To seek and find what nature has to bestow.
“The snow flakes are haunted,” cries the night
“They blend into the white, invisible to sight.”

The ghosts are whispering softly, they just whisper,
Not sure of the right thing to say, like a shy lisper.
Meanwhile, I am listening carefully, I just listen,
As the falling show does nothing but just glisten.

Snow ghosts endeavor to howl their secret incantations,
To draw us into the den of their sweet temptations.
They finally reveal what we have come to know,
The world of enchantment that lies within snow.

I loved this poem. Having lived in many cold climes, such as Alaska and Wyoming, I can definitely relate its imagery to what I have experienced. Very nicely done!

yes, the words 'perfection,' 'perfect' are the key words today, ten days before the day of the winter solstice. . . and because water is the perfect guide of our life on this blue planet -- the realm of the water element. It is good to talk to you as the mountain spring in the hot summer, it is a perfect companion to have a chat with you in the long winder night, ghostly and silently. A tender piece of the snow-flake's touch. Cheers, alex

Filled with imagination and illusion-nation. Unfortunately, while I have been mesmerized by watching snowfall, I have never seen any ghosts. Not even in plants and structures softened and covered with the white stuff. Metaphorically, the advent of snow heralds freezing temperatures that kill all leafy plants and therefore, the food supply for many creatures. A time of death from cold and starvation. And perhaps, a time of creating ghosts?

The trouble with a snow ghost is they tend to get balled up, and are slippery to catch. Interesting write.

Ahhh . . . Let's hear it big time for the "Snow Ghosts!"

Eh . . . Unfortunately, or fortunately, according to your way of thinking, it is bright sunshine and sixty-five degrees down here in the swamp.
