Nature’s qualities a colorful array
In every bird and beast on display
Each animal has a virtue in its coffer
Whispered litanies pour forth on offer
The shrewdness of the fox
The wisdom of the owl
The strength of the bear
The courage of the lion
The determination of the turtle
The shyness of the fawn
The speed of the hare
The pride of the peacock
The vision of the eagle
The innocence of the rabbit
The faithfulness of the dog
The playfulness of the cat
The freedom of the bird
The cunning of the spider
The industry of the ant
The foresight of the squirrel
The peace of the dove
The haunting of the wolf
The beauty of the butterfly
The diligence of the bee
The elegance of the swan
The stateliness of the giraffe
The nobility of the elephant
The ruggedness of the reindeer
Each of the animals seems to know
An individual gift to the world they bestow
God’s virtues on display in the animal family
To remind us of our own virtuous humanity.
It certainly is ironic that much of humanity is trying to destroy most of these creatures you so beautifully described either by breeding for slaughter, over breeding (cats and dogs) or by destroying natural habitat, ensuring extinction. That reminds me of our in-virtuous humanity.
You must have channeled your inner Marlin Perkins for this poem. Since humans are animals too, what is our virtue, beside stupidity? We might be the smartest in the animal kingdom, but we are also the dumbest at the same time.
