- The Miracle of Leaf Joy -

By John Herlihy

The miracle of leaf joy,

There I sat as a boy.

On the earth’s autumn blanket,

Ready to partake of God’s banquet.

The trees threw off their leaves,

Naked limbs overhead as the tree grieves.

The leaves rain down like winter snow,

With all the thrill Mother Nature may bestow.

Falling down as I look up amazed,

I catch my breath feeling dazed.

The leaves brush my open face,

But fill my soul’s empty space.

This day I know I will remember,

A day in a life in late September.

Such happiness known by a little boy,

Now filled with the miracle of leaf joy.

Ahhh . . . Yes, yes indeed, John. I recall much the same thing as do you. My favorite thing was wait until my parents raked all the leaves in one huge pile, then with a hoot and hollar I would take a running keap smack dab n the middle of it, and the run as fast as I could . . .

I remember those days in late season when everything turned to gold and russet hues. The crispy leaves beneath our feet, the mountains of crackling joys , how we threw ourselves in them with great abandon, with candy apple smiles, belonging only to the moment at large. Great memories my poet friend. Thanks for penning today . xo

Very nice! Well, we're never too old for leaf joy...

Your poem brought back memories of leaves piled high that we could jump in and not hurt ourselves in less we landed on a covered rake--ouch! The pungent smell and crackling sound as we covered leaf covered ground and the woods opened up to a longer view.

But when hunting, except for where the disturbed leaves left a trail by an animal, walking quietly through the brush was sometimes almost impossible to do. Sitting still and waiting for a noisy animal to come your way was often the only way to hunt.

I love it when the leaves fall like snow, but then reality sets in, and i know I've got a yard to clean up. Every fall I would gather some leaves with my G-kids, and then place them between wax paper, and then take a hot iron over the wax paper to seal them in. Then cut out different designs, and tape them to the windows. Kind like stained glass. Enjoyed the memories.

Penned in the only way possible: the precious innocence of a boy before the life becomes so complex that experiencing nature is taken for granted. Enjoyed this.
