-- EVENING STAR --
By John Herlihy
The evening star arrives without warning,
Fateful herald of the coming night.
A harbinger of light under night’s awning,
Shining upon earth its brave, solitary light.
Same time, same place, forever there,
Always rising skyward with a gentle wind.
Eyes dilating, neck throbbing, we simply stare,
Across the millennia, human faces always grinned.
With cloud cover, the evening star now gone,
It magical wonder to withdraw and disappear.
For one brief moment, we sense a thing wrong,
But we feel relief when our star does reappear.
Here below, we are humble when nature calls,
Content to know that nature always enthralls.
In my mind, I ask myself is that music I hear,
A musical presence drawing increasingly near.
