Gazing out my window
the leaf that was once green
is now losing its sheen.
The leaf is taking its turn,
having served its term...
and done so nobly and well.
It has devoted its entire short life
to making the world a better place
in which to live and breath.
Now, as it floats to the ground
seeming to be waving a fond farewell,
it is a signal that summer is on the wane
and fall is about to come again.
Let us take a moment from our busy lives
to pause...
and just say...
"Thank you, little leaf, you have helped make my day."
Not many wax poetic about the lowly leaf, but you have eloquently given it a frond farewell and a place to make it breathe.
I feel sorry for those that want to banish leaves by putting them in black, non biodegradable plastic bags to be shipped off to a landfill where they will be mixed with other plastics, garbage, paper, metal, chemicals and all other kinds of unwanted junk. The poor little things will have a hard time getting back into the ecosystem that way.
A book of nature inspired poems and essays, written from the heart and soul of a life-long nature, animal, and wilderness lover, and dedicated to today’s children - Earth's only hope for a better tomorrow.
