Plastic World
Everywhere
Oozing out,
Can you see it?
You’re wearing it.
Shoelace threaders,
Buttons, polyester,
Vinyl.
Seatbelts,
Barrettes, clips
Girls’ 99 cent slip-ons.
You sip it:
Water, soda bottles.
You turn it on:
Light plate switches,
Oven dials,
Range-top vents,
Ceiling fans,
Elevators,
Remote controls,
Appliances,
Christmas lights.
You play it:
Whiffle ball,
Flat screen televisions,
Stereo systems,
DVD, CD, Cassettes,
Records,
MP3 cases,
Speakers,
Keyboards,
Video game consoles.
It holds your memory:
Computers,
Thumb drives,
External hard drives.
It connects you:
Ethernet and phone jacks,
Hubs and wire ends,
Headphones and chargers.
It holds your edibles:
Ziplocs, Tupperware,
Cling wrap,
Shopping carts,
Tray tables,
Olive oil,
Spices,
Vitamins,
Candy,
Coffee beans,
Frozen meals,
Grocery store produce,
Microwave popcorn,
Lids for any material,
Pan handle insulators.
You open it up:
Blinds’ turners,
Refrigerator doors,
Washing machines.
It holds your
Hanged clothes,
Hand sanitizer,
Driver’s license,
Potted plants,
Pen ink,
Laundry detergent,
Paintings,
Photographs,
Memorabilia,
Knife blades,
Computer monitors,
Arm and back supports
For modern chairs and
everything you buy,
Over-sized for theft,
Fort Knox to open.
It’s on airplanes, in cars,
Soundboard panels,
Fast food signs,
Telephones.
It can even be used to hold itself:
Chapstick and gasoline,
Trashcans and lighters.
We burn it.
And childrens’
Toy stores
Sell these items
Almost exclusively.
Hook them early.
Make it ubiquitous.
Who cares where it comes from?
Who cares where it goes to?
A thousand years from now
Like the Bronze or the Iron
This will be known as
The Plastic Age:
A layer in time
That would not decay,
Killed land and sea animals,
Poisoned people,
Who could not stop,
This convenient cheap consumption.
So drink up petroleum generation.

As the plastic Age:
A layer in time ...."
Well said, Danae!
Those of us in the "civilized" world have found ingenious ways to disguise what we randomly throw away with abandon, but this is just as bad or worse. And as you have so eloquently put with the last line, all based on petroleum and the ills from that that are insidiously working against us.
When will we ever learn?
Ron
Well said.
Michael D.
with a thoroughly apt outcome. Bravo for telling us what
thoroughly debased gluttons we are and how we have thoroughly
failed as guardians of this planet we call home.
