IS THIS FAIR?
It’s now September,
Frost is in the air.
And that means it’s time,
For the County Fair.
Walking past the grandstand,
I could hear the tractor pull.
I had just ate an elephant’s ear,
And was feeling rather full.
The carnie man was barking,
“Light up your girl’s eyes.
Knock over a kewpie doll,
And win her a prize.”
I was drinking a glass of cider,
Trying to keep the yellow jackets away.
And I kept asking myself,
“You’re such an antique,
Why did you come on Kid’s Day?”

I hadn't been to a fair, perhaps, for 30 years when a few years ago, at a conference in Dallas, we were given free transportation, entry and copious tickets to the Texas State Fair. The first thing I noticed was the sights, sounds and smells that took me back to Wisconsin during my childhood when I never missed the annual fair. Even though a thousand miles miles distant and 30 years removed, it was the same with all the sideshows and barkers, calliopes and carnival attractions. There were new things like fried chocolate and pizza by the slice, but they fit in with old very well. I wrote a poem about the experience and posted it here. Shortly after that, Big Tex burned. But he's back, bigger and better than ever.
