You wonder why God
created some things ...
the sun, bad enough
without added fire
from the ground. Pulling
weeds, I found something
else, entirely -
skin came alive with
a shout, "OW that hurts!"
Leaped up, slapping at
the covering of
ants swarming my wrist
like a glove. Blisters
formed, itching, burning
pain, marks that will scar,
that will remind me
of my encounter
with the Texas heat -
not just the weather,
but fire ant bites, too.
This picture is amazing!!!! If it's one of yours, then my friend you are an awesome photographer!! Your poem was scary!! I can't stand a swarm of anything. Good write though...you got my attention. I'm not familiar with fire ants, but I heard on the news recently that they have been found here in New Brunswick, Canada. They must be able to survive the Canadian winter...giggle...I never want to experience what you did with them.
i experienced fire ants in Florida once as well as the every afternoon thunder storms ... not a pleasant experience ... you capture these phenomena well ...

Fireants I am quite familiar with those critters
I hate them and I take action against them
I sprinkle my lawn and all recognized anthills
with a repellent that kills them .....
they don't bother me anymore
if you see an anthill poure boling water over it
it works just as good

I never knew they existed but met up with them when I went to
florida, glad they are not in Jersey...maybe wear gloves, though if they get inside they may be worse...hope your pain subsides...e &
Oh boy do they ever!! Been bitten a number of times and it is not funny. I am so sorry. Soak your hands in peroxide, it will take the sting and inch away. Ooooooooouch!!!

EVEN BEFORE I READ YOUR WORK, I READ THE SHORT SYNOPSIS AND IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT OF THESE ANTS. THOUGH I WAS BORN AND RAISED UP NORTH, MY PARENTS WERE FROM THE SOUTH AND AS A CHILD, I VISITED THE SOUTH FROM TIME TO TIME DURING THE SUMMER. I PICKED COTTON ON A RELATIVE'S FARM LAND WHERE I LEARNED ABOUT THOSE LITTLE CRITTERS THAT WE CALLED 'RED ANTS'. ONE BITE WAS BAD ENOUGH, BUT I IMAGINE THAT A SWARM OF THEM DID A WHOLE LOT OF DAMAGE...OUCH! THIS PIECE IS WELL WRITTEN WITH THE PHRASES AND IMAGERY THAT STIRRED UP OLD MEMORIES. Fire ants... reminds me of home. I hate those little things. I read that researchers are importing yet another natural predator to combat them. I wonder how long it will take for this new bug to bug us. Loved the poem.
Yikes! I've heard about fire ants. Actually I remember one of my favorite movie scenes ... from the TV series 'V.' The leader of the aliens holds out a divided candy dish with several assortments of ants spilling out (if you remember, they were reptilian) and says, "Try the red ones, they're spicy."
Oh my, your poem brought me to your pain. I will send you some healing energy, hopefully you will be okay real soon!!! I loved your photo, they are always amazing as are your poems.

OW!! This one made me hurt! Sorry you had an encounter with the dreaded fire ant; they ARE painful when they bite! They are very well named! Hope you feel better soon; well done!

You described your experience well. I can certainly identify with you because I've been bitten so much when I work outside that I have tiny red scars on my legs to prove it. (Be glad the weren't those yellow jackets that build a nest in the ground. I was stung by a WHOLE BUNCH of them one time and that certainly is no fun.)

Those little buggers are omnivorous too,
They eat plants and animals.
Try a flamethrower next time.
