picking up the pieces of my shattered soul seeing their faces in my mind wondering what i could have done to change things
finding those kids dirty--hungry--crying for their mother (where was dad) mom in the kitchen dead she'd been there for some time
another chunk gone
seeing the aftermath of that horrible wreck six family members killed the drunk who hit their car--not hurt something is not right
another chunk gone
flogging elderly bodies at the insistance of relatives who can't let well enough alone breaking ribs trying to bring life back into bodies that just want to go home
another chunk gone
teens throwing their lives away acting like adults when they're just kids shooting dope--shooting each other babies having babies killing themselves for God's sake
another chunk gone
spit on--assaulted--threatened just for doing my job trying to help when they're sick or hurt no thanks no thanks
i don't think i have many chunks left to pick up
picking up the pieces of my shattered soul seeing their faces in my mind wondering what i could have done to change things
I used to do this work,(EMT) many moons ago, and got out of it for the reasons above...too much stress, long hours, etc...I find this to be an excellent tribute, a bit too graphic for some tastes, but still a wonderful written piece...thanks for posting it, Ed & Rufuz

Wow - very powerful. Excellent work! I'm so glad I didn't miss this one - so little time to read and so many wonderful poems!
Karla want to say this piece flows well, it's gritty.
I liked the repeating 'another chunk gone' echoes if you will.
How is it that some feel the weight of these injustices and atrocities?
see ya around kiddo, merry ho ho new year and all that to you and your little dog too (smile I meant toto, not Karen) but I do send her well wishes as well..
Awesome tribute to some awesome heroes, Karla. Well done! And Happy New Year to you and your Twink!

A very awesome write...it is an excellent glimpse of life through the eyes of people we owe a lot to, who try to pick up the pieces and save what is left.
writing your heart out.
