I lit a cigarette off the burner
Sat down at the breakfast table
And poured a cup of espresso
Wondering where the demons
Would slither out from today
You know, those pesky little creatures
Seeming to come out from nowhere
Trying to impress their significance
Making havoc
Being a real pain in the ass
Today, I laugh at these silly imps
And shush them away
Like flies they head out the window
Whose only purpose
Is to search for a pungent piece of waste
For I had a dream of a clown
Who made me smirk
For he had real flair
To scream out ghastly declarations
As he tried to blew up broken balloons
While balancing on his head
He would say the most serious things
While vomiting on himself
Such an iniquity of circumstance
I was sickened with misplaced humor
He seemed so familiar
But I really didn’t know him
For he was just a phantom in my mind
Yet he was quite good
At making himself seem real
So I guess this apparition of my sleep
Took my mind off of things
And strangely enough
The demons decided not to appear today
For the dream clown had scared them away
And for this I thank him

This makes me think of Stephen King. Let's just hope the kooky clown wasn't you. But then again, maybe it would be better if it was, as it seems to have given you the strength to scoof off the demons. Be well. ~ Sara
Bit of a bad-hair day, huh?! Blimey, are my jokes THAT bad?!!! Think your humour must be even worser than mine; this reminds me of a Gong concert in 1973 when some bloke sat cross-legged behind me started projectile vomiting all down my back... well, took my mind off the crazy antics of Wilko Johnson for a bit, and this sounds like much the same kind of distraction. Hmmm, grateful for small mercies, I guess. I'll just slap on a bit more lipstick and trundle off down to the compost heap on my unicycle... Reckon Mozart could relate to this and write a pretty good tune to describe it... We must be eating too much cheese! K xx

Clowns still try that at kids saturday shows.
Think this I would class as a nightmare to be sure..
LOL. I find these imps are driven by envy, and I keep wondering why they don't just return to their homes in the old country where they can understand things better in their native tongue since no one here seems to be to their liking. I've got a dream clown too. Sometimes he sleeps on the job, but usually he shows up before things get too far out of hand. Delightful poem, Jude. You made me smile. ~~Nordette
I have never liked clowns; there is something mysterious and dark hiding behind all of that whiteface makeup. I used to be a mime and even then, though I knew everyone in our troupe, once made up and silent, each took on the eerie feel of an unknown and unexpressed personality. Surely this could frighten any demon, as demons work in the light of clear vision and a clown would never allow them that. Humor mixed with dark and mystery, your poem, like the persona of a clown is both intriguing and beguiling. Great job, though I am glad I read this in the morning instead of before going to bed. ;)
Take care,
Sherry
As a humorous poem it is dark and deep and I enjoyed it no end...send that clown down NJ way, my demons and pesky little critters are as well a real pain in the ass sometimes...;) Ed
This reader's eyes have shifted to another part of the page. It is the clown's motive to make us laugh ... cut off the pant legs at the calf and put fringe on them and wear horn-rimmed frames minus the lenses. And then say the most serious thing. "One man is a doctor, so he talks about surgery. Another man is a teacher, so he talks about books. But doctors and teachers don't know anything about concrete. "You're a cement finisher and that's your specialty."
Well, maybe so, but when is the last time you saw a man standing about talking about concrete?
Dream Clown draws attention to an alter-ego I would say?
not meaning to dismiss the poetic finesse here or make light of a scary clown dream, but this is flat out hilarious... your clown visitor is a bit wacky and those demons know there's nothing so frightening as a clown on a mission. I have a feeling there's a whole other message I missed tonight, so I'll come back and try to get it later... God, I hope I don't dream a scary clown dream. Dawn
