Love Under Ice

If the rose is not watered
its petals dry and wither
and fall as drops of blood
on unfeeling ground

If the fire is not fed
the flames flicker and fade
in a grey eddy of ashes
the embers die
in the frigid hearth
like waning memories
in an aching heart

Unacknowledged
unrequited
unanswered
even the most passionate pleas
expressions of love
and relentless yearnings
lose lust for life

By and by
the stream freezes over
the flow of love is stilled
its song silenced

Does love still flow
under the icy surface of indifference?

Perhaps you sense it is my voice calling
from under the ice
Perhaps you are afraid
to find out

Will no one breach the glacial barrier?

It is truly up to you
and if you choose not to
this final sigh of sorrow
will fade away...

...and silence
will reign
as love remains
under ice

Yep! A lesson for the tongue-tied and shy here. Rejection is so painful; I spent almost two years at school following a beauty around - what a waste of my youthful young love ... ha ha!

Very deep piece Regis! It hit home with me because I have loved so many and felt ignored. Love can be cruel and silence only makes you hurt more. Love needs to be mutual for it to flurish. Sometimes it is mutual but one is afraid and backs away...Love, ~Chessly

OMG Reg, you know I can literally identify with this. The cold hearts of others put us under their icy feelings of unloving attitude. But that doesn't stop us from loving them. Do they really know what they are doing to us when they put thier loveunder the ice? It would be wonderful if we knew. Thank you for sharing.

May the Lord Bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and walk by your side. With love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister Barbie.

Regis, an emotional appeal from an aching heart. Unrequited love is a dragon with no flaming breath. Love once "under ice" is not easily exhumed. Your poem comes from a place where only experienced lovers have traveled. A powerful poem my dear friend. Love and peace to you. Jon Michael

Wow! This is very emotional and moving. The flow is perfect. The imagery is magnificent. And it's as if you tell a story with your words. And you do...

Titles in poetry are just as important as the poems. The title of this poem is great. Definitely makes me want to read the actual poem. It also lets me know that this is an emotional piece of writing and I can tell that it will be something I will greatly enjoy, which I did, a whole lot.

I see nothing that I would improve here. I think this poem is one of the top poems I've read by you.

Poems like these deserve to be put together in a book *hint* ...

Thank you so much for sharing this and please keep on writing.

Lena
