Poem Artwork

Daddy didn't tell me what to do
if a burglar came into our home.
But, he's here now picking through
all our stuff with a fine-toothed comb.

He took my lamp and the cord
The pawns and rooks of my chessboard.
He took our crystal dinnerware,
my table too, and every chair

He loaded up my water bed,
plus the mower in the shed.
He took the TV by the couch
and put it in his burglar pouch.

He picked the rugs up off the floor,
then he took them out the door.
He took the trinkets made of pewter,
and baby brother's two-wheeled scooter.

He quickly loaded up his sack,
and said to me, 'I'll be right back.'
He had a soda pop to drink,
then loaded up my mama's mink

He took the brooms and old dust pan
and put them in his mini-van.
He took the pictures off the walls
and all my sister's Barbie Dolls.

He took our washer and the dryer,
the fridge, the stove, and deep-fat fryer.
He took the spices and the salt
and asked me where we hid the vault.

He took my crayons and my glue
and our backyard barbecue.
He smiled and said, 'On my last caper,
I took the walls and left the paper.'

I said, 'Take whatever else you must.'
He cleaned us out and left the dust.

Then he left and said 'Goodbye! '
The phone rang and I said, 'Hi! '
It was Dad wanting to know
if the movers had been by.

The Wholly Book of Genesis by Jay Dubya

The Wholly Book of Genesis is a humorous satire on the first book of the Old Testament where the Story of Creation, the building of Noah's Ark, Sodom and Gomorrah and the families of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are thoroughly spoofed and broadsided.
