From the far north
Frozen in darkness
I come
Exultant in
My savagery.
Sensing my approach
Animals flee before me,
Knowing their heavy winter coats
Will not guarantee
Their safety,
Birds huddle,
Feathers fluffed,
As they seek to hide
Behind the trunks
And branches
Of trees.
These simple souls
Are wise to fear me.
But humans?
Ah!
Humans are
Unpredictable,
Some will cower
Warm in their homes
With fires and heaters
Protecting them,
While others,
Most unwisely,
Will seek to shut me out
With layers and layers
Of cotton, wool, and
Waterproof nylon
As they pursue
Whatever their meager lives,
Whether pleasure or duty,
Demand.
But are they really safe?
For I,
The Cold North Wind,
Will seek out every weakness
That will allow me entry,
Glorying in those
Who were most unwise,
Who underestimated my power,
And I will take
Many of them with me
On gales and wails
Of malevolent laughter.
A pleasant change from your romantic fare. You have captured the wrath of nature’s cold fronts that sweep down in winter time “Will seek out every weakness that will allow me entry,” Bound to exploit it. Harking back to a time when humans had only caves at a fire to try to keep warm. Freezing to death if they fell asleep.
A book of nature inspired poems and essays, written from the heart and soul of a life-long nature, animal, and wilderness lover, and dedicated to today’s children - Earth's only hope for a better tomorrow.
