The photo is mine and actually of the local mountains here in British Columbia, Canada.

I feel this power and... ...alienation sometimes...

Poem Artwork

Andes' Secret

In hell of men
So cold and seemingly barren

Where winter
Even in summer’s passionate heat
Seldom takes his leave
From shadowed crags

Sunlight plays upon
The ragged pinnacles
And paints them red and gold
While moonlight’s mood is silver

Where the condor soars
The chamois leaps
The puma inhales
A thousand scents
Of life
and death
smells good to many
for its cleansing ending

Where men cannot set foot
Then nature thrives
In heaven of the beasts

Interesting how you refer to winter as a HE. In the Russian language winter is called zima and words that end in "a" are referred to as SHE, making winter a SHE. And that's how I always thought of it.

Interesting poem, filled with profound thoughts and much to think about. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Regis, But your pen sets foot on places that man either fears to tread, or cannot set foot! This reminds me when I was driving through Canada, BC: the same kind of power/alienation came over me when driving at the foot of a mountain, looking up ... I have found no words for that feeling, but you have right here. My friend, I always look for you to read... you should be writing more... Miss you, my friend...

WOW, do you get alot of people reviewing you, I just noted that! They all like your powerful stuff, just as I do, so let me add one more review to keep you writing, I hope more and more...

I never knew a chamois was an actual creature, I only knew it as a piece of cloth of sorts to dry off my car, but haven't used it in a long time as they have gotten to be so expensive...

Anyway, those mountains almost look, in the picture, like volcanic sort of, dark and forboding, blackened ash. Even the cloud makes one think of volcanic places...

"Man cannot set foot", sounds a place I want to be, never have I lived with just Nature sounds, rather than cars and lawnmowers, kids and dogs, smells not of Nature but of other people, this poem however has put me in that place if only for few short minutes during reading this gem...ah to park my camper way out from humanity, to live off the land, & to die there if necessary, the only way to live...

Peace thru Nature, Ed & Rufuz

Like Katy, I was moved by your sentiment of feeling awe, but sometimes feeling of alienation, too. You have captured visually the breathtaking natural beauty, but also that chilly sense of aloneness as well. Very poignantly written, Regis. It's so good to be reminded that man has not tramelled and destituted every square inch of Mother Earth and that she is still supremely powerful, making us sometimes feel insignificant by comparison. Thank you. Kate

Regis.. I love the 'winter' verse, especially.. the poetry of this is stunning, indeed. My lingering thoughts, however, will be of the tiny-lettered preface here: "I feel this power and... ...alienation sometimes..." That has taken up residence in my mind, dear poet. I believe it has shown me a barrier in me I wasn't aware of entirely.. and now will work to bring down. Everything on this page has made a difference for me today.. I do thank you. We never really know where our words will go or what effect they will have... I'm so glad I read this. katy xox.
