I have been locked out of the site longer than the rest of you. I have only just been able to log into AD a few minutes ago after over a week off-line. Glad to be back. It will take a little time to "catch up" with my reviews.

A SIMPLE TREE
By John Herlihy

The tree knows not from whence it came,
Silently it stands. ever silent it will remain.
It does not speak, nor has need for words,
With open arms, it humbly welcomes birds.
Thru broken clouds in the early part of day,
The sun shines down with streaming rays.
Its simplicity praises God in sweet affection,
In thanks for the raw beauty of its perfection.
The passing seasons might change its attire,
The sun’s glow keeps the tree’s heart on fire.
The tree’s branches cast eloquent shadow,
Its shade spreads mercy upon the meadow.
Thru wind and rain, it bows as if surrendered,
Remembering divine origin, it is remembered.

Your poem is a stark testimony to the lack of appreciation we give such tenacious gifts the universe has given us. Having just read this article, I thought it appropriate to include in my comments. "Scientists in the UK and Germany have discovered that trees release a chemical that thickens clouds above them, which reflects more sunlight and so cools the Earth. The research suggests that chopping down forests could accelerate global warming more than was thought, and that protecting existing trees could be one of the best ways to tackle the problem.

Dominick Spracklen, of the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science at Leeds University, said: "We think this could have quite a significant effect. You can think of forests as climate air conditioners."

The scientists looked at chemicals called terpenes that are released from boreal forests across northern regions such as Canada, Scandinavia and Russia. The chemicals give pine forests their distinctive smell, but their function has puzzled experts for years. Some believe the trees release them to communicate, while others say they could offer protection from air pollution." The Guardian

I've been locked out as well. Odd that some have not been.

Trees are beautiful and they speak to us through their spirits ages old. You have given them due credit and this poem is fabulous!

Love ya!

What would life be like without trees? They are such an integral part of all of life's renewal. The mere fact that they live a long time gives them permanence and healing from weather's harsh blows. A wonderful ode to our good friend and useful servant, the tree.
