As many of you know I live in southern Louisiana and my area is in crisis. We are losing our coastline at a rapid rate and while this may seem a local problem, its ramifications are national, believe me. This piece is to be part of a project I'm working on in which all proceeds will go to 'Voice of the Wetlands', a local organization raising funds to help build levees and rebuild the coast. Drowning
I remember standing
Here, toes curled in grass,before
Waters rose, flowing
Quickly, chased by wind...and
Memories were left to drown
I remember running, falling into clover, chasing butterflies, and listening to the music of the bayous. I remember land and sea, co-existing, respecting spaces, water only tiptoeing across when nudged by named malcontents, and only for brief visits. I remember and wonder...when did it happen? When did nature's reclamation of its earthen child become so blatant, so cruel? And why... why can we not stop its unrelenting greed, its need for more? Do others not understand the magnitude of this loss? Do they not listen... not hear the voices of the ancients, the voices within swamp and marsh, water and soil, flora and fauna? Do they not hear the pleas... save me... save us? Do they not see that not only memories drown... so do dreams. I remember what was. I see what is... and I weep. But I fear even more what still might be.
Is it too late to save the Louisiana wetlands? I fear so, but pray not...a powerful plea for assistance, for change. Well done, Myrna, may this bring about the needed help and awareness.
