Taxi Cab Confessions: New York City 7/23/2005 4:24:59 PM
A Case of Spouse Abuse... I had a very strange ride last night. I was on West 3rd and 6th Avenue in Greenwich Village in New York City, when lo and behold my rear door swung open and a gentleman began shoving a woman into the rear of my taxi. I didn't know how to act. Were they high on drugs? Were they insane? You see, it was a full moon night and a summer blaze in the air.
I yelled, "Don't get in! Shut the door!"
They of course ignored me and the gentleman, if I can call him that, said to take him to 55th street and 9th Avenue. I just took off. There wasn't a cop in sight and to physically threaten to remove passengers is against TLC Regulations. (What else is new)?
The woman started in by telling him he was a wife beater and that she wasn't going to stand for it anymore. He told her that she always acted this way when she was drunk. The back and forth recriminations continued for most of the ride. Occasionally when stopped at red traffic lights she would swing open the rear door of her side and attempt to exit the cab. He in turn just reached out and dragged her back in. Was this some kind of role playing on their part? I could only wonder? It was freaky.
Finally, I got them to their destination. He had paid through the partion a block before. After they had left I saw that he was pushing her into the hall of a rather upscale building for such heathenistic types. Then she glanced at me with pleading eyes. He pushed her into the lobby. I drove away wondering if perhaps I should have gotten involved, but years of experience have taught me not to get in the middle of a domestic quarrel. I'm no coward, but I think this karma wasn't mine to get involved in.
Frankly, I don't get it because I have never had violent feelings towards the opposite sex, or my own gender for that matter. If I've had street fights it was in defense only. I really despise violence and all the perps who think it is cool to hurt, kill, or maim their follow man or woman.
No more to say! Just glad that shift is over and the weekend is here!
