Did she love me? Now that we are just friends I think I have come to realize that my love for her was one sided. I don't really know why I loved her, but I think it was a little bit like the novel "Ask The Dust," by John Fante. A great book to be sure. One that very accurately illustrates how a man can fall in love and not be seen as an object of desire. Rollo May said that love can not grow without passion, and that passion dies away unless fueled by the fires of love and devotion. How come it's so difficult to put the two together? Anyway, it is something to be pondered.
Ah, if only I could enter the woods like Thoreau and build a little hut by a beautiful lake and contemplate the vast beauty and mystery of nature in a tranquil state of solitude. Yet I still feel that we must seek out human relationships in order to get to know ourselves on a more intimate level.
I've learned a lot about myself just through relationships. I've learned things that I could never have learned had I just been a yogi or a zen monk sitting in a cave. That's not to say that a period of isolation is not important to a spiritual seeker, it most definitely is important. But the chakras will only take you so far, because we can not become realized unless we understand our relation to every thing around us, or to state it more clearly, our interrelationship to everything we see, touch, and feel. A leaf can not exist without a tree, and a tree would not be much of a tree without its leaves. And where would my poetic mind be without the colors of autumn, or the fresh scents of spring?
