The Beef Industry must calm Consumer fears. What is the best way? The only proper way to reassure Consumers of Beef is a self-regulation and self-insurance program. All Beef Growers today have Computers, and a cheap testing program of sample analysis can be developed, where samples are electronically evaluated at Grower site. The perfect solution is no animal leaving the Growing area until passed. Consumers can be assured no diseased animal will leave the Farm or Ranch. The meat will be retested at the packing plant, before being integrated into the Meat supply.
All involved in the Meat industry need to contribute to a Self-Insurance program. All animals diseased or at potential risk will be destroyed, but Growers will be repaid for the loss from the Insurance Fund. This will be higher than expected, with a probable 0.04 percent of all animals destroyed. The Self-Insurance, though, should not cost over $.07 per lb., probably less than normal inflationary impact. lgl
