I did not watch the Debate, determined instead to view commentaries and assessments of the Debate. Here is what I found from the transcript of the debate from the Washington Post.
Bush claimed al Qaeda was functionally destroyed, but his Administration will not come up with numbers on such destruction, though always shouting about arrests made etc. It is my estimate that the Bush administration arrested or killed only those they broadcast in the News media, far fewer thand 75% of al Qaeda leadership--actually only about 3% of the estimated roster of 350 active members estimated.
Kerry made the clear point that diversion of American forces to Iraq was a mistake, even if he voted for the war. Iraq is not, and never will be, the center of the focus on the war on Terror. He equally held the high ground by his statement that American troops were sent into Iraq ill-prepared, lacking vital personal safety equipment.
Bush directly lied when he said he went to the United Nations willingly prior to the Iraq war. Rumfeld and Bush were determined on war with Iraq, and it was only the pressure from the leadership from his own Party, which forced him to return to the United Nations forum. I personally do not like a man sitting in the Oval Office, who would willfully lie about his behavior as Chief Excutive, when it was so patently obvious he lied; it leads one to believe the individual is arrogant and blind.
Neither man gave a viable procedure methodology for exit from Iraq or Afghanistan, as far as I had read the transcript--which was admittedly not far, I getting tired of bulls--t. Bush extolls Democracy in Iraq, while his pet dog Allawi delays Elections, because he could not get elected Dogcatcher in Iraq. Kerry holds that the panacea is the construction of a Grand Alliance, like such will stop the bloodshed. Foreigners will never dominate the internal politics of Iraq, a nation peculiar even among Islamic nations. Just as We could not insist that the NVA not rule South Vietnam, so We cannot insist that the religious Islamic majority--controlled by the mullahs--not rule Iraq. Our political ideals will not transplant to a country already under the effective Popular control of a religious Elite. Our continued presense in either Iraq or Afghanistan will only produce more American Casualties, and hatred for America because of American bombs and shells destroying Iraqi homes and lives. This Author again calls for unilateral withdrawal of U.S. military forces from both Iraq and Afghanistan. lgl
