On August 28th 2005, I watched President Bush on television declaring the Gulf Coast regions of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana disaster areas even before hurricane Katrina reached landfall. And, much like he did after the 9-11 attack on America, he went into automatic pilot. . . I've never blamed President Bush for the outright neglect shown to New Orleans after hurricane Katrina because Bush is not a king. A President is only as good as his powers of persuasion. He declared the Gulf region a disaster and let his administration handle the rest. When Michael Brown and FEMA failed to do what they were supposed to do from the start, Michael Chertoff and the Dept. of Homeland Security should have kicked in and did what FEMA was too slow to do. The horrors in New Orleans for those first three days rest solely on Brown and CHertoff who were too smug and complacent to see that thousands of people were suffering needlessly. Instead of following the aide of churches and charitable groups, FEMA and the DHS held them from coming into the city! Months after, the Red Cross came into the city with months old food that was virtually making people sick because it was close to spoiling! It was food and aide that should have been given on September 30th, not October or November! I can't blame Bush for that. Bush has faced some serious events during his presidency, and he has never been seen as a brilliant president, but the people he has surrounding him has not done his image any good.
