Hurricane Gustav started showing up at about eleven thirty last night with squalls slashing at the windows and settling to a drizzle. At about five this morning, I was awakened by gusts of wind and rain. This hurricane reminds me of hurricane Audrey in 1957, the first time I became aware that such things existed. It's a gusty rainmaker. The power had not gone out, and I felt really proud of Entergy up until 5:52 when the power flickered a few time, and finally went of about five after six. The winds are picking up, swaying the trees. The fence I resurrected three years ago is becoming unearthed from the strong winds. By this afternoon, when things settle outside, I'll go out and set up the generator for tonight. This is no Katrina. At this time during katrina, I saw wood, branches, and garbage can tops swirling in the air. Yhe wind is howling, but I havent saw anything rolling up the street. We're going t be drenched by rain for a few hours, but I have confidence that there won't be any massive flooding. I've worked around the London Avenue and Industrial Canal levees and they are stronger than they were before. New Orleans always had problems with street flooding. This time, the levees will hold.
