Snow Angels

Spring is coming! Wiarton Willy says so, Mom's wise whispering soul says so - so it must be true! Spring is a very patient season, putting up with Mother Nature's way of changing her mind so often. It always brings with it hope, and signs of new life all around - gifts that we are all desperately in need of. We have been very fortunate to have had a Winter that was fairly moderate, temperature-wise, save for a few trips to the deep freeze.
I hope that all of you are finding ways to have some fun, to stay creative, keep growing, and to exercise those wonderful kindness muscles that I know you have been blessed with. It certainly can be difficult to stay motivated with all of the usual sources of inspiration and camaraderie cut off or greatly reduced. We have been the beneficiaries of so many wonderful kindnesses - from our children, family, friends and neighbours - yummy food offerings, snow shovelling, book suggestions, beautiful artwork and messages, phone calls, and all of the smiles and comments as we travel this stressful COVID road. I know that it has been said repeatedly, but each of those actions reminds us that we are all in this together - truly all family.
Tuesday brought a lovely snow gift - Standing up to my thighs in snow, balancing myself with a shovel in each hand, snow angels came into my mind. Playing in snow is one of the great equalizers - everyone is a child while laying back in the arms of a snow angel - smiling up into the sky and eating snowflakes; I was sorely tempted to let myself fall back and enjoy that feeling once more, however, reality told me that I would need actual wings to rise again! I will have to be content with the lift that those fun thoughts gave to my spirit, and in remembering that you cannot be in the arms of a snow angel without smiling, looking up into the vast expanse of sky - the hope that covers us all! Not too shabby!
Thank you God for giving me strength to shovel today - please grant me the strength to shovel away the snowbanks of worry that hinder hope's way -
Feel the Spring - Be the Spring!
The following poem speaks to the way that the concept of pride has so often been used as a weapon, rather than as a tool for building respect and hope. I hope that my humble words speak to the innocence and snow angels in all of you and draw out some healing smiles -
Be Kind
I rose from sleep,
And there it came,
To stop my breath
To squelch my flame,
"You are unworthy,
Yours the blame,
You cannot hope
To win life's game"
But, deep inside,
I heard the words,
Encouraging,
"Be kind, Be kind"
How hard it is
To seek and find
The path that leads
To peace of mind;
To heed the voice
That climbs the slope,
Carrying the seeds of hope,
To light our path,
to conquer doubt,
The way is clear,
Its voice rings out,
"Be kind, be kind",
Pride will entice,
And ego take,
Crushing spirits
In their wake;
Their heavy shoes
Will weigh us down,
Direct our gaze
Inward and down;
Love stops cold
That toxic wheel;
Walk together
And we'll heal,
Arm in arm,
In kindness, building hope;
Be humble in our giving,
Humble in receiving,
Take pride in our gratitude,
Take pride in each kindness,
Take pride in every act of respect,
Take pride in acknowledging
That we are all children of the same family,
Sharing the playground together.
