There’s no silverware at my table,
all the ghosts of my past take a chair.
I wish there was something to serve them,
though what can you serve spirits but air?
“Lay down the knives.”
“Stop the bombing!”
“Where there’s no peace,
there’s no sleeping.”
“Tell George to put aside his war toys.”
“But, honey, you know boys will be boys!”
Each takes a gulp of conversation,
there are many views to consider
but there is one thing all agree on.
“We think it’s time Earth had a sitter!”
Chemistry sets,
germs made to kill,
dying’s horrid,
maiming’s no thrill.
“Straighten up naughty children!” “Grow up!”
“Where’s medicine? Food to sup?”
They’re at ev’ry table … don’t you see—
they’re not taking this war laying down.
We’re acting like children bored, fighting,
but causing destruction all around.
“Hide-and-seek games
now played with guns,
make us nervous—
give us ‘the runs’.”
“Why don’t you all go straight to bed, sleep?”
“Talk in the morning.” “Promises keep!”
