Written a few years ago when April at the South Jersey Shore was welcomed by snow.

overnight,
on the cool breath
blown

this way
from the tall timber
up north,

across vast
lakes
winding through

valleys,
bouncing off green
mountains,

skirting the poison
of petroleum
flames,

swinging to the sea,
kissing
grassy dunes,

catching
an icy wind stream
descending

in delicate
flakes
of white crystals

swirling
around my head,
stinging

my sunday morning
face,
defining

branches
of empty trees
waiting

to bud
the moment
the snow

melts
and the birds
sing.

the small droplets of verse, so fragile and linked like heartbeating fingers. . .. . gives the splendour of this magic moment all the more appeal. . . . .winter undressed in spring, like a jealous love....saying look--im still here...dont i make yous till quiver and shiver?
elegant and so smooth....
beautifully captured.
do it again.

I like what David (Hightower) says about the images in each stanza being like footprints of the journey.
Everything is observed in detail, but with simplicity.

Well. I am reading you for the first time, Gene. I don't give a hoot about reviews. This is an excellent write. "lumbering" ?? The rhythm perfectly parallels the swirling snow and it's movement. Like a good photograph that freezes a time and place, you have given us a snapshot of Jersey. Enjoyed...

Sounds like Montana this year...yesterday we awoke to snow...again...third time in the last week. Sigh...I am beginning to wonder if Spring will ever really come.
The imagery of your words creates a serenely peaceful setting.

I love the style and how you paint grand pictures with but a few words. You're masterful Gene!
Thanks for your support of my work. Coming from an artist like you, I count it a real honour.

And, now we know; April can't be trusted any more than snow!
How beautifully you've brought it to us... as if we, too, were walking with you on your beach. The time, the scene, the words... scrumptious! - Bill

Your usual fine eye and ear for nature's ever-changing pageant, Gene.

I am noticing the big bulb flowers of the magnolia this Spring in crowded Beijing. A touch of beauty, but one feels shy to stop and admire on the busy campus. Tis then we wish for mountain freedom
and an absence of people.

Gene,
Gorgeous control and cadence, each spare three-line stanza a nugget, and the entire work with a deeper and more far-reaching dimension than the sum of the parts...it is a goldmine. And 'When men were all asleep the snow came flying' came to mind wonderfully.

as fine a surprise snow event as I have ever had the pleasure of reading about Gene -- interesting how the maidenly color stimulates our thoughts to purity and unequaled cleanliness -- even if this one did leave you, a bit white with fright -- peace and love-- Jon Michael

Gorgeous meter, meaning, hungering, spring-time greeting, Gene! Loved how the piece 'took me with it'! Again, reading each first line of each verse creates a poem within a poem, as does each after.
