Your blinkin right they are! You make me regret all those fireflies we used to put in a jar with nail holes in the top so that they could breathe and then go around with our jars acting as flashlights so that we could see in dark places. Only to find that they were all dead by morning.

I read once that fireflies were in dire need of being saved from extinction. They were being studied to death. The satirical article was most convincing.

Nature has many mysteries. Why do fireflies light up? I don't know, but I do know they bring light to many evenings.

Yes indeed! Fireflies were always a mystery to me. Loved catching them as a kid and would love to see more of them today. In Florida, we get "Love Bugs" that look like them but they don't light up!

Anyway, this is what I found on Google about our glow-wormed friends:

Flash patterns vary from short burst to a long continuous flashing sequence, and different firefly species have their own unique successions of light, making it easier for compatible mates to find each other.
Both male and female fireflies turn on their green lights when choosing a mate, and use their blinking lights as a means to communicate during courtship.

I love sitting out at night and watching them. What entertainment! Are they "on the blink?".........I think not! 'Enjoyed this a lot!

Always loved them, but when I grew up they were not around, at least not over by the ocean, but was interested to see them when visiting my family in PA...-e-

Love the fireflies, my friend. I imagine every one does the same. If I ever run across a person who does not love/like the wonderment of fireflies, I shy away from them. They are never to be trusted..

As I read through your poem, my heart soars in remembrance of our childhood time when we would try to catch those fireflies deep into the night. We would put them into bottles to capture the light. Thanks for the remembrance.
