Beyond Crown Mountain


There is a place where one may see a panorama of
mountain peaks which are unequalled in Georgia
This scene is less than a hundred miles away from
the teaming millions of Georgians living in Atlanta

Leaving the crowded cities the drive is north on
Georgia 400 and 60 to the crest of Crown Mountain.
There one sees blue mountain peaks spread out
over hundreds of miles east to west within the state.

Dropping into downtown Dahlonega -The Gold City
- the best preserved small town anywhere around
Its ancient Square still offers big oak trees shade for
rest and parking for those seeking their 'hometown'

Off the square are parks for picnicking and play in
the city as the site of America's first gold rush 1828
The unique Gold Museum on the square is open to
visitors year round on Wednesday through Sunday

Into the mountains from Dahlonega is on US 19
north beginning the climb into thickly wooded hills
The twists in the highways are part of the climb
slowly to altitudes of 3,500 to almost 4,500 feet.

Scattered throughout these mountains are State
Parks resorts motels and the South's best 'vittles'
Other treats that are free are the overlooks where
families put dust-covered binoculars to good use

It all begins in Dahlonega the best gateway to
Georgia's awesome high level natural beauty
There at the top one looks northward and sees
tall green mountains beyond Crown Mountain
