Troops marching home, heads held high,
The lucky ones, that didn’t die.
Bravely positioned within harm’s way,
Confident they could save the day.
Side by side, they stood together,
Liberty, life and justice forever!
For a war torn country, living in the past,
A taste of freedom that cannot last!
The struggle for justice will go on,
But without peacekeepers, hope is gone.
Oppression will be theirs once more,
And their homeland will be rife with war!
But our troops were never welcome there,
Many lost their lives; it wasn’t fair!
Where friend and foe looked the same,
Radicals, comrades – what’s in a name?
Trickery, treachery, they faced it all,
But they were there when duty called.
Now they return to live their lives,
Sons, daughters, husbands, wives,
Picking up pieces where they left off,
Psychologically scarred - a terrible cost!
For although they leave the battle behind
The horrors of wars are theirs for all time!

(like this line). Another great piece of work from one of the best female poets on the den.

And we should all be there for them, when they return.

Namaste
My father almost died in World War II and has always impressed upon me the great gift of life, how grateful the surviving Veterans were to just be able to survive, and how every moment from then on has been a gift, bless them all.
