Yay! Mike is back from his ZBT Fraternity weekend soiree and immediately he came in with news about one of his brothers. Mike stayed at his place; and his place gave Mike a wow factor. Details, details. He took a shower wherein there is shower head just like a rain shower, aside from your ordinary shower. When you press a button behind, it becomes in a minute and a half a steam room. The place is completely filled with steam. His espresso maker is built-in that makes coffee, tea and steams your milk. And the TV room is amazing! There is a 52 inch screen with a 102 inch projection that comes out of the ceiling. The sound system is behind the screen but the sound is acoustically clear – meaning that the screen does not create any barrier to the sound. And the windows were redone from a vinyl window to wooden window with counter weights. They returned the house to what it originally was including replacing the windows to a curve window. They tore the stucco off and from the marks on the original wood that they replaced the original touches including the dental and reef-like decorative touches on the house. They installed a marble staircase, too. They plan to add another floor to their already three floor house. The attention to detail regarding the house is amazing. I asked where it was. Is it in Burlingame? No! It’s in the Cow Hollow district of San Francisco. And the house is as big as Mike’s place although not sporting the amenities of his friends place.
He is indeed a good business man, always making deals up until 8:30 pm with his Chinese counterparts. He always works but not the way you and I work. It is not a nine-to-five job. He works 24/7 and always on the phone. She, too, is self made. She does not work anymore. In fact, instead of working, she is training for the Iron Man. She has a bike that weighs 6 pounds while Mike’s bike weighs 16 pounds. With that, Mike said that he could probably bike a hundred miles.
The family spends three months in Tahoe. They have land but they stay at a resort. When playing golf, their golf paraphernalia is ready and polish and waiting for them at the back of their cart. But to top it off, they are the nicest people, unassuming and unpretentious in their demeanor.
And now for the small details. Yeah, Mike enjoyed the weekend. They are like people that had not been apart from Mike’s life. Some guys had age quite a bit and some didn’t. Definitely, old friendships are rekindled in this soiree.
One thing resonating in these is what Mike said. She is trying to reinvent herself.
Yes, reinvention; it is not only reserved for the wealthy. We, too, find ways to reinvent ourselves. Probably not on getting wealthy but reinvent ourselves to something different. I for one wanted to reinvent myself to becoming a full fledge writer. I have written since I was at the tender age of three or four. I remember sitting at a side table I converted into a writing desk and there, I begin to scroll the alphabet. By the age of thirteen, I wrote poetry and simple plays. Novels are new to me. I would attempt to write one but I would get stuck. And in 1999, after “exhausting” writing essays, I then begin to write my first novel and I finished it. This was at University Avenue in Palo Alto, at the outskirts of Stanford University.
The jewel of it all is that our character did not change. Things change. Times change. They, Mike’s friends, attempt to amass wealth at a tender age is match only by my attempt to be a writer. But the basic tenet of reinventing ourselves has not.
