Predicament: The Season Re-liveth 3/21/2012 7:49:56 PM
It’s Spring again! Close to a month ago, I saw buds from my plants beginning to sprout. It was late in the evening that I doubted myself but now, it was undoubtedly near Spring. The buds of the trees turned pinkish red and although the leaves had not yet sprung, you can say that the season when everything started blooming is here. Even the animals, particularly the birds were back. The crows are cawing, although the bluebirds had not yet arrived. And for a while when I was observing a movement in my Pine tree, I thought that it was a hearty woodpecker. It turned out that the wiggling was made by the tail of a squirrel. There were white flowers growing rabidly across my garden and soon those red flowers will again grow on the bush right outside my bedroom window.
The rains are back but this season did not seem to exhibit a lot of days of rain. It was quite subdued. The weather in the middle of the country was in the mid-60 to 80’s. But yeah, the rains are back, at least here in the Northwest. It was even forecasted that there will be flurries in a day or two. No matter, I foresee brighter days ahead.
At night, I could see Venus and Jupiter. The first time I saw them was after I arrived at home. I looked up in the sky and by then the skies were all clear. Among the branches of the tree of my next door neighbor, I thought I saw two brightly lit stars. They were extraordinarily bright that I thought at first that they were planes about to land at the airport. But planes have twinkling beacons; the same with stars, they twinkle. These two objects did not twinkle at all. Next day was the same. Even up to now, I could still see them. I told this incident to the group at Trumps and PDX Mike said that they were planets, Venus and Uranus…and then he corrected himself to Venus and Jupiter.

Of course, it was Saint Patrick’s Day. The greens were out. There were lots of young folks scattered about in the streets and in the bars. Everyone was happily drinking and having fun. Parades, parties, the NCAA basketball competition, the election of high school princesses for the Rose Parade and foot races all converged in this fair town. I think that Downtown was crazier than Hawthorne but I really would not know.
Every Spring hope seemed to spring eternal. All the tragic events of this past winter will be gone. There will still be snow atop Mount Hood, but snow remains there until July anyway. There is joy in the air, a light-hearted feeling that all will be well, that all is well. Spring brings out what is good in people.
No matter how bad events are such as during the Arab Spring, the North Koreans launching a satellite into space, Iran defying the sanction of the west against its nuclear ambition, Syria killing its own people and the horrible atrocities of those individuals who kill, maim and displace people in that dark continent, Africa, over here, life goes on; for days like today will go on. I will still go to church, eat at New Seasons, hang out at Starbucks and end my day at Greater Trumps.
Indeed, we all will be reminded of these tragic events through talk shows and protests. And I guess I am part of the discussion. But there will always be Spring to renew ourselves.
