It’s been years now since Jeremy Li, a star player of the NY Knicks, was playing basketball, according to Russ. He had sub for an injured player and in the last five games had been phenomenal. I really don’t know much about basketball. All I know was that if a player shoots a ball within the circle or made a relay, he can score two points; and when it was outside the circle, three.
What I know was what luck and popularity was all about. Jeremy Li had been playing basketball for a long time and yet, his star had not risen all throughout those years. It was only in this recent history that he became an instant success, even though his being a success was not instant. His luck had change and now he is popular.
Take Harrison Ford for instance. Russ heard that he was a practicing thespian for over ten years before he got tapped into Star Wars; and subsequently Indiana Jones. And his star was rising ever since. But I know that Harrison Ford was a carpenter and yes, he had been dabbling in acting for quite some time. But ten years! It was indeed a long time before he became famous. But at the time after being cast as a member of Star Wars, he was dubbed an instant success.
Success could be defined in many ways. But in the vernacular, success in one instant was an acknowledgement of one’s accomplishment. For one, it could be popularity. One could accomplish this in several ways. For example, we can have borrowed popularity wherein one becomes famous because he was endorsed or merely mentioned by someone famous; or one’s work could be easily found in searches; or there could be the enigmatic word-of-mouth. It was accomplishing a fan base and whatever the number of people who followed you, you were judged by how many fans you had. After all, popularity was one sign of success. This may take an instant or may take years. And for those trying to accomplish this route, it could be the sweet smell of success right around the corner (instant success) or a long sludge through the bowels of blood, sweat and tears. Success, nonetheless.
(And this is talking about success. What if after trying so hard, you have not accomplished anything or died before accomplishing anything? I say that this is not a waste rather it is a sad realization of the truth, that only a few of us will ever find success. Success is a two-step process: achieving the goal of creating a product and then, finding the market for that product. And it takes Luck to achieve success.)
Luck plays a critical role in accomplishing popularity. Luck is that elusive mistress, that playful coquette that picks and chooses who gets the prize. Without her, all your effort is in vain. Your accomplishment is not acknowledged. Only when Luck is on your side, can you achieve what you really wanted. Your goal could be accomplished, no question about it. One can write books, for example. But popularity (and success) because of your books is a different matter.
All you can do is try, and achieve your goal. Have your product ready. For when Luck knocks on your door, you are that ready groom (or bride) who walks that aisle. Luck will come…Luck will…come.
