Frida Kahlo. I did not see Lauren as Frida Kahlo. Lauren took up that role. She remotely looked like Frida but she performed it quite well; so well that my mom did not realize that when the show had ended, she did not realized that Lauren had already presented her part. When I visited them, Lauren reprieved the role and I was impressed.
You know, Lauren has an acting talent. When she was going to nursing school, she wanted to become an actress but coming from a family not entwined in the arts, we told her to concentrate in a true profession. She can still dabble in the arts, acting, but that when she had a break, then she can substitute her nursing career for acting.
When my sister and me where growing up, our parents asked us what we would like to be. My sister said that she wanted to be a painter. Painting! What a useless endeavor. My mom told her that nursing would be a great profession. So, like a good daughter, she pursued nursing and had forgotten painting as a profession. But she did not forget about painting. When we had grown into our professions, she still dabbled in painting. It never became her profession, though.
The same with me. I always write. I love writing. I write more than dwell in the verbal arts. So when I was growing up, I wrote, but my profession was in banking, sales and marketing. But this economy helped me changed my profession. As I mentioned before, I started to be more serious in writing because there was a growing gap between the times I was laid off until the time I would have a job. So I wrote and published my work.
I still deal with marketing. But here I am, now, writing. It almost is my profession. Up until I can support myself writing, I am still doing marketing.
There were happy times with Lauren and Taylor in the arts. I did not know that Taylor writes, too. She also dealt with the creative art like painting and handiwork. When I returned home, to Vallejo, Lauren and Taylor asked me to be part of their movie show. It was very amateurish. But it was fun to make. I was made into a monster; in fact we were all monsters. There was also a time when we photographed each other. I took their picture in the most fun manner. They had their hair down and on the count of three; they toss their hair upwards that made their photographs look like monsters indeed.
Lauren almost became an actress in the Twilight saga. She got a letter inviting her to audition for a part in the movies and she would have gone to the audition. But an engagement prevented her to come to Portland (where the audition was), so there you are. Sometimes, it was timing and sometimes it was luck to be in the picture. It was not yet her big break.
So what is art?
I would define art like this. “My grandfather was a laborer so that I could become an engineer. I was an engineer so that my son would become an artist.” (This is the nearest paraphrasing of the saying.) So art is the highest endeavor one could aspire to. Sometimes, when you thought that you are the only one who reveres art, there are indeed others that follow.
