Rain 1/26/2012 10:30:51 PM
It’s raining again in Portland, Oregon. The clouds stream by like a fast-clipped sailing ship lambasting the skies. Of course, no sun had shown except on some occasions when rain clouds were segmented into cells. But this time, the clouds were universal in scope. I can see Bagdad theater right across. (Bagdad is a neighbor of Greater Trumps. It is a landmark and not only movies are shown in the theater but also live acts such as comedy specials and nature conservancies.) It is showing Drive at 9:00, Moneyball at 6:00 and Happy Feet at 2:00. The crowd from Starbucks, from where I was seated had dissipated. When I entered the establishment, the place was packed. In fact, there was no place to sit. Now, the crowd had gone. Even the three guys seating at the window on a regular basis was gone. There were regulars that trudge in here. I know this since I was one of them a recent time ago. I can see one right now. Soon, the others will do so in succession. Since I spent the entire day here when I was unemployed, I particularly know who comes and who goes.
My coffee is now cold, that is because I fell asleep. I sleep while covering my eyes so that management would not realize that I am doing so. But I guess, they already knew. My friend from this Starbucks already knew that I slept here while dilly-dallying on all sorts of non-essentials. When I was unemployed, I tried searching for jobs via the internet. (You know that going to places, that is, pounding the streets was the norm before. It was difficult and expensive. First you have to dress up and have money for transportation. And when you discover that there was a job somewhere, you have to spend money in photo-copying your resume type on a Selectric typewriter. I looked for a job before with resume typed on my old typewriter, not even a Selectric typewriter.) So yes, my friend knew. Then, I looked at my dwindling funds at the bank and my dwindling assets in my IRA account. Remember that this was the recession. Not that it had improved substantially. And then I wrote something, anything! This maintained my sanity. I realized that my resume was getting a wider “yawn”. That meant that my most recent job was getting farther away (by date) and I still didn’t have a job. So, I thought, why not go into publishing and marketing what I’ve written. So now, aside from the job at Leaf Guard, my preoccupation was publishing and marketing my work. And more recently, write something about it in the form of a blog. If ever I loose my job again, at least I have a job I can go by – Publishing and Marketing, my work.
There were a lot of cars swooshing about. People loosely walk about. Portland people loved the rain. There was this magnet wherein people from other places had an umbrella in the rain. The Portland guy had his umbrella down while he enjoyed every droplet. I don’t know why; maybe because we live in the Northwest where rain is the norm. And if you lived here, you will understand why. So, you will see less of people carrying an umbrella and more people wearing a hooded garment.
Tomorrow, the forecast is sunshine and then rain, rain, rain. I just love watching my world go by today when it is raining outside while I sit inside and enjoying the weather. It is cozy in here. I love to listen to the music being played. I sometimes stop doing what I am doing and contemplate on what the song is saying. I hear the clanging of dishes and the banging of steel implements and the swish of foam and air into the coffee. When people come in, sometimes I just watch them and am oblivious of what I am doing. I get hypnotize, wondering what they are thinking – their hopes and dreams, their inconsequential musings of the café, what they are wearing, their attention to their partners, loved ones or little ones, or their idiosyncrasies of choosing something to eat. Which bring me to my essential, my coffee is cold.
