Losing My Job, Again 3/5/2012 8:01:49 PM
Boy, it is so crowded here at Greater Trumps! Cody is out there talking with some dudes. And PDX Mike is beside me blogging; and sometimes we take our time to talk. He mentions about changing the focus of his job search. He said that instead of being a chef at a restaurant to managing one, why doesn’t he start to teach cooking? He mentioned that he has a buddy at Oregon Culinary Academy. He will one day drop at his place and ask what it takes to become a full-time instructor at the academy. And then I mentioned that he should turn his home into a cooking mecca. Fortunately, he already talked about that prospect with his wife and his wife approves. He asks his buddy in San Francisco about this but his buddy can’t do it because of a host of issues – kids and the likes. But to make this venture a success, he needs to design a class that is one day and five hours in a day. Therefore, he has this cooking class at home and a full time cooking gig at the academy.
I too am shifting directions. For the second time in my life, I lost my job, yesterday. Jared, my boss, declared yesterday Costo and LeafGuard severed their ties. LeafGuard is still allowed to showcase their product but we are not allowed to market it anymore in their stores. The general manager quit. Bob and Kelly followed suit. There was a lot of he-hawing, in the meeting. And then, he mentioned that he doesn’t like to lose us, the remaining marketers. So, he planned to occupy our time with canvassing. Canvassing was knocking on doors; rather than offering the product in stores. He again he-hawed on this and then ask each one of us if we were for it. I raised my hands and said that I’d rather quit because I do not have the skill set to do it. He felt sorry to lose me for I produce for his department.
This morning, I did what I have to do. I applied to Oregon’s Unemployment Insurance. My mom called me to see how I was doing. I assured her that I was doing alright and that I could not talk with her just now because I was completing the application. After that, I started to search for jobs in Craigslist. I concentrated in the marketing and then sales section; after which I looked at the other department in Craigslist such as administration and writing. I know that there were other websites I can go to but what?
So here was my plan. I intended to search for companies via the internet that dealt more or less with what I do, say advertising or being a vendor. And then search within those companies that needed help. I shall then apply to those companies. This was a shift in strategy. I shall not wait for companies to advertise in Craigslist. And Advertising and being a vendor is a whole new direction for me to take on top of marketing and sales.
As I was wrapping up my search, I got a call from Red Star Advertisement. They asked me a few questions such as if I was in sales for a long time and if I made some cold calls. I said yes to both and before I knew it, I had an interview this coming week. I hope I get the job. I don’t want to wait two years and two months again to get a job. So wish me luck. I will need it. And although the unemployment rate here in Portland had gone down from 13% to 8.80%, I hope that I would not be part of that 8.8%, again.
