Dena 3/6/2012 6:50:35 PM
I remembered Dena when she was still a girl. A bright and effervescent person, she is a child perpetually happy being who she was; that it was so easy to get along with her. When I was having my transcontinental travel across the U.S. and before reaching Chicago, she told me that she waited for me until she fell asleep. She was so excited to meet me for she did not know I was, and I did not know her up until then.
We went to Great America and while at the park, she coaxed me to ride the Demon, not only once but twice, if I recalled. I knew that I was so scared to go but with her, riding the Demon became a breeze. We even went to Toronto, along with her sisters and Dad and had a stopover at Niagara. When I had my own apartment in Oakland, California, Dad brought her and in a cafe in Berkeley where we had a grand old time, talking about her plans for college. Dad and I were calculating what she would become because she was very talented. She played a musical instrument, already evident when I first visited her in Chicago, and someone who was very accomplished academically. We ended the conversation with knowing that she was too young yet to ascertain whatever she hopes to accomplish.
Then one day, Dad called me at work when I was working for a university in the Bay Area, California. One can have a degree in two years and a half to three years when one attends this university. Dad told me that Dena wanted to attend my university in the hopes that she would finish in less time than going to a “regular” university. And so she did. She finished in two years and a half and was the class’ valedictorian. I was very proud of her. Her grades are all A’s. From beginning to end, I did not see any A- in any subject.
She was attending the same university, now taking on a Masters degree. Here, Brian followed her up to Federal Way, Washington, for she indeed loved Dena. Soon, they married. It was a happy marriage. I attended it in Las Vegas. The wedding could have been grander but grander or not, I certainly had a good time. Soon, Benji was born and then Mia. I met them in Seattle several years ago on their way to a Wedding in another Washington town. It was a short but wonderful meeting. I drove to Seattle just to meet them. By the time it was Lauren’s engagement party to Michael (in the Bay Area, California), they attended that, too. You see, Lauren, Taylor and Michael always went to Las Vegas to visit their dad. And in those visits, Dena always entertained those three souls. Now a toddler was at hand, Audrey. She has the bluest crystalline pair of eyes. She was so beautiful.
Now, for some time, I hadn’t heard from Dena. I hadn’t seen her in Facebook. One day, she said hello to me in Facebook. I replied and she said that she was really busy because she had been pursuing a second Masters degree. I was absolutely surprised. Then recently I read from Facebook that she was asking help from me because she was to give a speech at her graduation the next day. Too bad, I missed it by a day.
I am so proud of my sister for not only having three beautiful children but also obtaining three degrees. She, to me, was s supermom, able to take care of the kids along with Brian and finished up on her most important achievement so far.
So to you Dena, Congratulations! I am proud of you but I know that Dad would have been much prouder.
