A Slave No More 3/3/2012 10:21:38 PM
He normally would wake us up in the morning saying, “Hey Gang…” and announced the schedule for the coming week. We would sometimes ignore it for we schedule appointments when the sales force was in session or the time slot was non-existent. And when we did well, he would heap praised upon us and perhaps tell the boss. The boss would text us that we’ve done a good job (thanks to his prodding.) And when we don’t do quite well, he will say, “…you have been doing a consistent job. You deserve to have days like today.” That I didn’t respond with a thank you meant just that, “thank you.” It did not have to be melo-dramatic. But all was well between him and me.
I thought that all was well on his side, too. I thought that being with the company for so many years meant that his position was secure, that nobody could ever touch him. He would work hard, indeed, and that meant that he can have his position for as long as he wanted it. But this time, did he want it, still? Or, was he forced out of his position? I sensed that the boss still wanted him for he was kind to him just last week. He told us to thank him for to make schedules was indeed difficult. But the question remains, the top bosses, the bosses of my boss, did they not want him anymore?
We would think that when we have a job and we quit, we would say that we are slaves no more; that we suddenly are unburdened by the responsibilities that compelled us to act. The next day would be another day; another day to take it easy, to smell the roses, to make the days after, days to beholden. There will be searching for a new job, of course, especially if you are less than fifty-eight years old; for you are not yet eligible for social security. But if you are over fifty-eight, you have the option to retire. But would you, especially if you have responsibilities or you don’t want to be bored out of your wits? A slave no more, to what? To those who meddle in our private affairs for the benefit of the corporation. To the responsibilities that we hope not to fear because it faced us day in and day out and that we are used to or we get used to it. A slave no more. If not the corporation, aren’t we slaves to our own lives, the lives that we live; the familial responsibilities, the friends that we encounter day in and day out. Are we totally free if we just concern ourselves with ourselves? That we are not forced to do anything except by our own needs, if indeed we initiated the process.
I surely will miss him, for many times he said thank you to me while I did not respond. I took it that he already knew the gratitude I feel. He was gone just like that starting this mid-morning. And I just knew that whatever I said, he will receive it but will not respond to it.
I left a message via text mail. I said, “It was a pleasure working with you. Good luck in whatever you do!” I never more asked him why or how. I just knew how these things worked. We just move on to our next challenges. Whatever made him quit or made him force to quit was not open to conjecture, anymore. After being unemployed for two years and two months, I begin to realized that things happen. It just does. Yes, maybe, he is a slave no more.
