New pants and new shoes. Crisp creases, stiff fabric, squeaky rubber. Are the compliments really more sarcastic than they sound. Gone is the comfort of fabric broken in so well that it doesn't scrape at my knees. Missing is the spot inside my shoe that was rubbed away so toes could spread out and breathe. And when this set is all broken in and comfortable enough to sleep in without irritation.
And is the workplace any different? Rotate people for enrichment into new positions after a few years, and when comfortable there, either send then someplace else or trash them like shoes that have lost their sole (soul) and stitching.
